There are three main laser treatments available in Australia. Each has their pros and cons and below are some key differences between them. At the Sydney Eye Clinic, we believe TransPRK is the superior laser treatment and we have the highest number of TransPRK treatment done to date. 1. TransPRK

Benefits

  • 100% laser procedure
  • Uses the latest PRK technique called TransPRK
  • Low risk of dry eye & infection
  • Cost effective
  • Suitable for people with thin corneas who may not be suitable for SMILE or LASIK.

Considerations

  • Slowest recovery
  • Some pain experienced during recovery
  • Some sounds and odour during the procedure.

2. SMILE® (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

Also known as: ReLex® SMILE®, Keyhole LASIK, 3rd Generation

Benefits

  • Quickest recovery
  • Minimally invasive
  • Pain free
  • Low risk of dry eye or infection
  • Silent & odourless
  • Fastest procedure

Considerations

  • Newest procedure. No long term studies yet completed
  • Generally higher cost

Not suitable for people who play contact sports, pilots or military personnel due to flap detachment risk. This procedure is not conducted at the Sydney Eye Clinic.

3. LASIK (Laser-Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis)

Other names: Femto-Lasik, Flap-based procedure, 2nd Generation

Benefits

  • Quick visual recovery
  • Pain free
  • Most widely performed laser eye surgery.

Considerations

  • High incidence of dry eye
  • Higher chance of infection
  • Some sounds and odour during the procedure.

Not suitable for people who play contact sports, pilots or military personnel due to flap detachment risk. This procedure is not conducted at the Sydney Eye Clinic.
