Dr Michael Thornton studied medicine at Sydney University, graduating with Honours, and subsequently attained two Masters degrees while acquiring extensive surgical and ophthalmic training.
He completed his ophthalmology training under the auspices of Sydney Eye Hospital, and has worked in many of the hospitals in Sydney, in addition to rural and remote locations in Australia such as the Northern Territory.
Michael is an experienced cataract and refractive surgeon. He has a particular interest and expertise in refractive, multifocal & complex cataract surgery, minimally-invasive glaucoma surgery (iStent & Hydrus insertion), and sulcus (‘piggyback’) lenses for multifocality, or magnification in advanced macular degeneration.
In addition, Michael is a lecturer at Sydney University and is actively involved with training and curriculum development for the College of Ophthalmologists. He also participates in aid programmes to South East Asia. He holds public appointments at Concord and Campbelltown Hospitals, is a lecturer at Sydney University, and is actively involved with registrar training and the education of future ophthalmologists.
